iPhone volume
How to increase iPhone volume when it's too quiet
Quick answer
To increase iPhone volume, first turn off Reduce Loud Audio in Settings › Sounds & Haptics › Headphone Safety, try EQ «Late Night» in Settings › Music, check Balance, clean the speaker grille and make sure sound isn't going to Bluetooth. The system can't play louder than 100%: if one video or recording is still quiet at max, make the file itself louder with Increase Volume (up to ×10) and save a new copy.
Your iPhone is at maximum and you still can't hear the video, the voice message or the song. Usually one of a few settings is quietly capping the volume, or the sound is going somewhere else.
Work through the fixes below in order. If everything is set correctly and one particular file is still quiet, the problem is the recording itself — and that can be fixed too.
Settings that cap iPhone volume (check these first)
These settings don't show a warning, they just keep the sound lower than it could be:
- Reduce Loud Audio: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Headphone Safety. When on, it caps headphone output at the level you set. Turn it off or raise the limit.
- Sound Check: Settings → Music → Sound Check levels all tracks to the same loudness, which pulls loud songs down. Turn it off if everything feels soft.
- EQ: Settings → Music → EQ. Late Night compresses dynamics so quiet parts come up; Loudness lifts bass and treble at low volume. Try both.
- Volume Limit / Screen Time: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Volume Limit can be locked by a parent or an old setting.
- Bluetooth: some earbuds and speakers keep their own volume level; raise it on the device too.
Speaker, case and Bluetooth
Lint in the bottom speaker grille or a case covering it can cut the volume noticeably — brush it gently with a soft, dry brush. Open Control Center and check the audio output: if AirPods or a Bluetooth speaker are still connected, the sound plays there. If calls sound quiet, hold the phone so the earpiece at the top is against your ear.
At maximum and still too quiet? Make the file louder
The volume buttons only change how loud the phone plays. If a video, voice memo or MP3 was recorded quietly, it stays quiet on every device. Increase Volume raises the level inside the file up to ×10 and saves a new copy, so it plays louder everywhere — including on other people's phones.

Do it in Increase Volume
Free on the App Store. Import, drag the slider to ×10, tap Download Processed.
Tips
- Restart the iPhone if the sound suddenly dropped everywhere: a stuck audio route is a common cause.
- Check the Ringer and Alerts slider separately — it does not change media volume.
- Boost a file before sharing it: platforms and other phones can't fix a quiet recording.
Questions people also ask
Can I make iPhone louder than the maximum volume?
Not for the whole system — 100% is the hardware limit. You can make individual videos and audio files louder with an app like Increase Volume.
Why did my iPhone volume get lower by itself?
Usually Headphone Safety lowered it after loud listening, Sound Check is on, or the output switched to Bluetooth.
Does cleaning the speaker really help?
Yes, if the grille is clogged. Use a soft dry brush; never push sharp objects or liquids into it.
Increase Volume makes the audio inside a file louder and saves a new copy. It cannot raise the hardware volume limit of the iPhone speaker or change system-wide playback volume.
