Why is my iPhone video so quiet? Causes and how to fix it

Recording causes (the video is quiet everywhere)
These are baked into the file. They explain why the video is quiet on every phone you send it to.
- Distance: phone microphones are tuned for a subject within about a metre. A speaker across a room comes through faint and roomy.
- Covered microphone: the main video mic sits near the rear cameras; a thick case, a finger or a pop-socket can muffle it. The recording is quiet and dull.
- Wind and background noise: iPhone reduces gain when the environment is loud, so the person talking gets quieter.
- Screen recording capture level: iOS captures app audio at a reduced level, and even lower if the in-app volume was down or Bluetooth headphones were connected.
- Received clips: a video sent through WhatsApp or Messenger is re-encoded by the service and sometimes arrives with a lower level than the original.
Playback causes (every video is quiet on this phone)
These make your phone play quietly; the file is fine and will sound normal elsewhere.
- Bluetooth still connected: audio is going to AirPods in a drawer or a car stereo. Open Control Center and check the output.
- Reduce Loud Audio: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Headphone Safety caps headphone volume. It is a good protection, but it makes quiet videos even quieter on headphones.
- Attention Aware Features (Face ID iPhones): Settings → Face ID & Attention lowers alert volume when you are looking at the phone; some users find media feels quieter too.
- Dirty speaker grille or leftover water: a wipe with a dry soft brush restores a surprising amount of level.
- Speaker balance: Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → Balance should be centred.
The fix for a quietly recorded video
You cannot re-record the moment, and iPhone settings cannot change a saved file. Photos has no volume slider; iMovie can raise clip volume to about 500% after you build a project.
