The Voice Memos app offers a few playback options, and people often assume one of them will make the recording louder. None does.

What Voice Memos can do (and what it can't)
Open a memo, tap the Options (sliders) icon and you will see:
- Enhance Recording: reduces background noise and echo. Useful, but it is a *playback* setting; Apple's documentation states it does not change the recording itself.
- Skip Silence and Playback Speed: convenience features, no effect on loudness.
- Studio Voice (supported models, Spatial Audio recordings): reduces room reverb; again for playback.
- Trim / Replace: edits length or content, not level.
Nothing in Voice Memos raises the level of the saved file. When you share the memo, the recipient hears it at the original volume.
Why the memo is quiet in the first place
iPhone applies automatic gain while recording, but it cannot compensate for a speaker several metres away or a phone lying screen-down on a table with the microphone blocked. The result is a recording whose peaks sit far below the digital ceiling. That distance is exactly the headroom a booster uses: a quiet memo can usually be multiplied ×5–×10 without clipping.
Boost the file with Increase Volume
Increase Volume accepts the M4A file that Voice Memos exports, shows its duration and size, and lets you multiply the volume up to ×10. The Improve Audio Quality toggle is aimed at speech intelligibility, which is what a voice memo needs. You hear the result with the Original/Processed toggle before saving, and the louder file is written as a new copy to Files, Messages, Mail or any app you choose.

Share the memo to Increase Volume
In Voice Memos, tap the memo, tap the ⋯ button, choose Share, and pick Increase Volume from the app row. (If you prefer, choose Save to Files first and add the file from inside the app.)

Enable the toggle so the boost favours the voice.

Drag Volume multiplication to ×5 to start; distant recordings often need ×8–×10. Tap Boost Volume.

Compare
Flip Original/Processed at the loudest part of the memo (someone laughing, a cup being set down). If it crackles, lower the multiplier.

Tap Download Processed and choose Save to Files, or send the louder memo straight to Messages, Mail, WhatsApp or Notes.

Tips
- Record with the phone on its back, microphone end towards the speaker, and as close as is polite. It makes far more difference than any setting.
- For transcription (Notes, Otter, Whisper), boost first; speech recognisers make fewer errors on a louder, clearer file.
- Keep the original in Voice Memos. The boosted copy is a separate file.
